1980 USA Olympic Hockey Team Miracle on Ice Game issued jersey Norcon
Rare opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic jerseys in sports history. Bill Whelton was a defenseman for Boston U who tried out for the Olympic team in 1979. In 4 games at the National Sports Festival, Whelton tallied 4 points, fourth best among all defenseman, but it wasn’t enough to make the initial list of 26 players chosen to continue on with the team. Brooks kept a close eye on him during this time and Whelton was among a handful of college players he kept on reserve as late adds to the Olympic team. Injuries to defenseman Bob Suter and Jack O’Callahan left the team thin at defense in the weeks and days leading up to the Olympic Games. Likely Brooks had this jersey made as he contemplated decisions on the final roster. The jersey stayed in Brooks possession until 1984 when he passed it along to one of his close personal friends. The Norcon tag in the collar was removed as it was displayed in a restaurant, however you can still see remnants of the tag as pictured. Likewise the tag on the lower left front was removed. Most players also did the same. You can see some extra material in the pictures as evidence of its original placement. Please let me know if any other questions. Note, I would also consider trades for other 1980 USA Olympic hockey team memorabilia.
